May 2017 Letter from the Murshid Council Regarding Zakat

Bismallah ir Rahman ir Rahim,

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon you.

It is the time of year to again be preparing for the blessed month of Ramadan.  It is not only a gift for us all but also a deep blessing and time to thank Allah. Allah also calls us to give our zakat. We would like to share with you our discussions and recommendations regarding zakat payments.

We feel that the giving of zakat needs to be pure in its intention. It is one of the center pillars in our way. Unlike sadaqa, or charity, zakat has a very deep mercy, knowledge, and obligation. On the inner and outer, it helps to purify our wealth and our giving. Please read the chapter on zakat in Sidi’s book The Deeper Meaning Behind the Pillars of Islam.

We believe in the giving of zakat a primary intention is to feed and care for the poor, needy, and the sick. This is one of the most important aspects of zakat. We also acknowledge and recognize that our guide, Sidi, was clear that zakat can be used for other things such as the education of people who are seeking to learn sacred knowledge.  We also know that Sidi also gave zakat monies to a variety of people for a variety of reasons as Allah guided his heart. Many throughout the world can benefit from the giving of your zakat.

We believe that Sidi always operated from the deep Mercy in his giving and that this was the deeper principle operating for him at all times in what he did and where he gave the zakat.
